Short attention span theatre

Micromedia is addicting to me. I can’t live without Twitter. At Web 2.0 Expo, the speakers of the “Short Attention Span Theatre: micromedia and microblogging”, you could follow , and your Twitter updates would show up on the screen.

The audience controls the session. You could also suggest topics or update the background image on the screen:

What is micromedia?

Micromedia is a much smaller thing that just Twitter.

Byte-sized types of information appearing. Smaller bits happening a lot faster. Utterz is an audio version of that. Seesmic is a video version of that.

Where did micromedia come from?

One of the starting points of micromedia, there was an interesting prototype of this. People started to build little apps. Buddy Gopher – you could pull all the status messages of your AIM buddy list. (I used to use that all the time). It’s like a pre-historic Twitter.

It’s moved to center stage: Facebook mini-feed, Pownce…

Twitter’s user visits have grown tremendously. SxSW 2007, Twitter had an advantage of everybody. Thought leaders like Scoble put it out there. It’s interesting to see three products with influential features, a small group of people can define it.

How does Twitter complement traditional blogging?

Brian Solis – “It’s a way to share content, ask questions, and learn. It’s completely different than blogging. Any time I post on the old blog, I get more comments and responses within Twitter more than the blog.”

Amy WOrley (sp) from H&R Block was scanning the Twitterverse for people complaining about taxes. They are using these tools to listen to people’s frustrations and get them in the right direction.

Overheard “Twitter is a small group of nuts”.

Twitter is natural for us to use because we have been using SMS and IM tools for a while now. There is a nice short hand interaction with it.

TwitPitch – elevator pitches.

What would a company lose by completely ignoring Twitter?

As the community grows, those conversations are gonna be more relavant. If you ignore it, you leave it to other people to respond.

Does Twitter increase or decrease productivity?

Is Twitter becoming spam? Lots of people follow me randomly.

LA FIre Dept. was using Twitter to announce fires. This might be a bad idea because what if the tool goes down? Should the government build something like this that is reliable. Better use PHP :)

Sponsored micro-blogs? It’s possible.

The content from Twitter is moving off Twitter to other applications.

What if someone says, “I don’t get it?”, or “I don’t feel a need to be more real-time than I am now”. Stop explaining it to people. Just let them put their hand on the stove and see if it’s hot.
