Leo Laporte sent an invite to his Twitter audience to try a new service called Plurk.
It’s a lot better looking than Twitter, and it hasn’t gone down yet. Maybe because they are filtering their users from the start instead of launching for the world when you are not ready to scale.
Plurk has some interesting features. It feels easy to use if you are a Twitterer, but almost too complex. Here is your “dashboard” page, where you can see what all your friends are doing in a timeline.
Notice how you can change what verb you want to describe your actions. You can also “freestyle” and use any verb your heart desires.
One thing Plurk does well that Twitter hasn’t gotten a handle on yet is organizing the community. You can actually reply to people’s “plurks”.
You can also get karma by using the service. Some incentive that kinda reminds me of World of Warcraft.
Unlike Pownce, this service is more like a Twitter clone. Will the audience move? Leo Laporte has a heavy influence on Twitter users, and if he likes it, and others switch, we could see the alpha geek web community move here.
Or it could just break a lot like Twitter.
