A Curated Index of the Best Addiction Treatment Centers California 2026, Private Inpatient Care Facilities, or Top Rated Medical Detox Programs
What is the difference between "private inpatient care" and "medical detox," and why does it matter which one you choose? In short, medical detox is the first step, when the body clears alcohol or drugs under a doctor's supervision; private inpatient care, often called residential treatment, is the longer stay that follows, when you live on site and attend therapy every day. This index explains nine California programs in those terms, defining other unfamiliar words along the way, starting with Bright Paths Recovery, a boutique Los Angeles home that offers both under one roof.
Start with Your Insurance Card
Before you compare programs, it helps to know which ones your insurance will open, since coverage rules out more options than anything else.
If you have a private plan. Most people with insurance through work have a PPO or a similar plan, and many of those plans will pay something toward programs outside their network. Bright Paths takes most PPO plans and works with out-of-network benefits, after a free check of what your plan covers. Wish relies on private insurance. Clearview names four carriers it is in network with: Kaiser, Health Net/MHN, Aetna and Anthem Blue Cross. Breathe Life says most large insurers are in network, Hazelden reports broad acceptance, and Duffy's lists Kaiser Permanente and TriWest.
If you have Medi-Cal. Medi-Cal is California's name for Medicaid. In this index, CRI-Help accepts it with fees that rise or fall with income, and Beit T'Shuvah works with Drug Medi-Cal as a partner.
If your plan is not listed. Hoag offers an online estimator instead of a list of carriers, and a quick call to any program can confirm coverage. Bright Paths and Clearview do not take Medicaid or Medicare; Bright Paths points those callers to the county's helpline for substance use services.
Matching the Program to the Moment
Think about where the person is today. Someone still drinking or using daily needs medical detox first, and the simplest path is a program that handles detox and inpatient care in the same place. Bright Paths, Wish, Duffy's, Hazelden and Hoag all describe both stages.
Someone who has already been through detox and wants months of structure, community and spiritual practice may be better matched with Beit T'Shuvah. Someone whose biggest struggle is a serious psychiatric condition, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, may need Clearview's specialist focus, while someone whose substance use grew out of trauma may look at Breathe Life. And for a household relying on Medi-Cal, CRI-Help is the most affordable door in this index.
Four Things to Check
Detox and inpatient care in one place. Moving between programs after detox means a new intake and a new team at an early stage.
Who supervises detox. A named medical director, or a clear statement that physicians and nurses are present, tells you who is responsible for your safety in the first days.
Outside review. The Joint Commission and CARF are independent organizations that examine how programs operate. A credential shown on the program's own website is easier to confirm than one found only in a directory listing.
Life after discharge. Ask what support continues once inpatient care ends, from outpatient groups to sober living and alumni contact.
1. Bright Paths Recovery: Best Boutique Detox and Residential Home in LA
At Bright Paths Recovery, medical detox happens in a dedicated medical office inside a 12-bed Northridge home, overseen by Medical Director Dr. Adnan Khoury, MD, MS. Medication is used only during detox and stabilization, with the goal of finishing treatment without ongoing medication.
Private inpatient care follows in the same house, usually for 28 to 40 days, so there is no move after the hardest first days. A team the company sizes at three staff for every two clients provides CBT, DBT and motivational interviewing, and conditions such as anxiety, depression and PTSD are treated alongside addiction.
- Joint Commission accreditation, DHCS certification and LegitScript
- Couples rehab, pet-friendly stay and veterans track
- Same-day admission in many cases
- Alumni app and weekly check-ins
Pricing: Not published. Free benefits check; most PPO plans and out-of-network benefits accepted; no Medicaid, Medicare or outpatient level.
2. Duffy's: Best Destination Program in Northern California
Duffy's Napa Valley Rehab sits in Calistoga, about 400 miles north of Los Angeles, and has treated addiction since 1967, which makes it the longest-running program in this index. Today it belongs to Acadia Healthcare, a larger company that operates behavioral health programs.
Its private inpatient model pairs detox and a residential stay with outpatient care afterward, and it adds creative and mind-body sessions such as art, music, yoga and meditation. Family therapy and care for co-occurring mental health conditions are part of the program, and alumni services continue after discharge.
- CARF accreditation and CCAPP membership
- Wine-country setting far from city pressures
- Insurance checked at no cost
Pricing: Not published. Kaiser Permanente and TriWest appear among accepted insurers.
3. Hazelden Betty Ford: Best for Family Involvement
The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, about two hours east of Los Angeles, handles medical detox with its own medical staff and follows it with inpatient care that has support at every hour. Outpatient sessions, online treatment and a dedicated program for opioid use disorder are also offered.
Relatives play a large role here. Workshops are offered for families, children have a curriculum of their own, and some sessions run in Spanish or are designed for Native American families. Its California location page names The Joint Commission and LegitScript as outside reviewers.
- A sober home on the same grounds
- First assessment free of charge
- Phones kept in rooms; only ADA service dogs allowed
Pricing: Not published on the location page, which links a financial aid policy.
4. Breathe Life: Best for Trauma-Focused Inpatient Care
Breathe Life Healing Centers, in Laurel Canyon, builds its inpatient program around trauma, meaning the lasting effects of frightening or painful experiences, along with PTSD. Separate tracks serve LGBTQ+ adults, people affected by chemsex and airline flight attendants.
Its ladder of care is long. A person might start with withdrawal care, spend a period living on the campus, then step down through partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient groups to regular outpatient sessions, and finish in transitional housing. The website names detox as one of its levels without giving its location, so ask about that before admission. A Joint Commission Gold Seal and a LegitScript mark appear on the homepage.
- Medication for addiction available
- A family workshop over three days
- Alumni groups online each week
Pricing: Not published. Breathe Life reports in-network contracts with most large carriers, showing Anthem, Aetna and Cigna logos.
5. CRI-Help: Best for Medi-Cal
CRI-Help is a North Hollywood nonprofit that has served Los Angeles since 1971, according to directories. Its medical detox uses medication when withdrawal is moderate or severe, and residential care afterward is built around 12-step meetings, yoga and a case manager who helps with practical problems such as housing.
When the residential phase ends, clients can continue in day treatment and outpatient groups, and alumni can move into sober living. Choose Help names CARF as its accreditor.
- Intake answered at any hour
- Spanish-speaking staff
- Programs for pregnant women and mothers
Pricing: Not published. Medi-Cal, installment plans and fees based on income.
6. Clearview: Best for Serious Mental Illness
Clearview's residential program in Venice is designed for adults whose addiction comes with a serious psychiatric condition, from schizophrenia to borderline personality disorder. Its main method is DBT, short for dialectical behavior therapy, which teaches skills for managing overwhelming emotions.
The addiction page does not describe detox, so someone still using may need medical detox elsewhere first. After residential care, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs continue with the same organization. Its site shows a Gold Seal, LegitScript approval and a state license.
- Veterans accepted through VA Community Care
- Homes near the Venice treatment buildings
- Special diets, including kosher and vegan
Pricing: Not published. Kaiser, Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Health Net/MHN are in network.
7. Hoag: Best for Hospital-Based Detox
In Orange County, Hoag handles medical detox inside its hospital system, where doctors and nurses are on duty at every hour. For people whose health makes withdrawal riskier, that level of medical backup can matter more than a home-like setting.
After detox, the inpatient stage moves to SolMar Recovery, a 21-bed residential unit on the hospital's Newport Beach grounds. Hoag describes the program as accredited, though its resources page does not say which body did the accrediting.
- Assessments free on any day
- Separate groups for chronic pain and younger adults
- A family program lasting a week
Pricing: Not published. A price estimator is available online.
8. Beit T'Shuvah: Best for Long-Term Inpatient Care After Detox
On Venice Boulevard in West Los Angeles, Beit T'Shuvah provides inpatient care that lasts months instead of weeks, combining Jewish spiritual life, 12-step work and therapy. Because the program has no medical detox, you would need to finish withdrawal care somewhere else before arriving.
Residents also give up their phones for at least 60 days, must understand English, and can work in the organization's bakery or thrift store. The Joint Commission has accredited the program since 2015.
- A career center inside the program
- A separate program for gambling
- Scholarships for those who qualify
Pricing: Not published. Free cost estimates; Drug Medi-Cal partner.
9. Wish Recovery: Best for Detox Through IOP on One Property
Wish Recovery keeps medical detox, residential care, partial hospitalization and an intensive outpatient program on a single estate in Northridge, according to its press release. That means you can move to lighter care without changing addresses or teams.
Detox.com is the source for its Joint Commission accreditation, rather than the company's own pages, and public listings show no state license number. Ask the admissions team for both before you commit.
- A track for executives and professionals
- Private suites, per listings
- Horse-assisted therapy
Pricing: Not published. Private insurers are accepted, according to Rehab.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is Medical Detox?
It is the supervised process of clearing alcohol or drugs from the body, with medical staff managing withdrawal symptoms. Bright Paths provides it 24/7 in an on-site medical office, and Hoag provides it inside a hospital. How long it takes depends on the substance and the person.
What Is Private Inpatient Care?
It is residential treatment in a private program, where you live on site and attend therapy daily, usually after detox. Stays in this index range from 28 to 40 days at Bright Paths to many months at Beit T'Shuvah.
Do All Programs Offer Detox?
No. Beit T'Shuvah requires detox first, and Clearview does not describe it. Breathe Life lists detox without saying where it happens, so confirm the arrangement before admission.
